The Structure of the Atlas

Within the atlas, there are three categories of map layers:  Thematic, imagery and base (which is what you’d find on most maps).  To use the atlas, you can select different themes of maps and imagery to be displayed on different base information.  Examples of thematic maps are “salmon habitat”, “playgrounds”, or “low income neighbourhoods”; imagery includes air photo and satellite images, while base information includes road networks, rivers and streams, and city boundaries.

On the left side of the atlas webpage, you will find the map layers in folders and sub-folders.  The number of map layers available to you in each folder varies depending on the size of the area you wish to display.

To make it easy to focus on map layers associated with specific themes, 9 sub-atlases have been created, each displaying selections of thematic map layers.  All thematic maps available in the sub-atlases are also available in the master atlas.
