Atlas Overview

Kamloops is breaking new ground in the development of a Community Food Security Atlas. This is appropriate given the history of active food security partnerships in the community, particularly the Kamloops Food Policy Council.

Food security definition
"Community food security exists when all citizens obtain a safe, personally acceptable, nutritious diet through a sustainable food system that maximizes healthy choices, community self reliance and equal access for everyone" - Bellows and Hamm, 2003.

In partnership with Agricultural Science and Nursing students at Thompson Rivers University, the following map layers have been developed:  retail food, counter service food, community gardens, community food, and healthy food basket locations.  Information on these map layers can be found in the metadata

The diagram below shows how a food security atlas can contribute to policy development that supports community food security.
